Ecuador says Mexico granting asylum to former Ecuadorian Vice-President illegal

Date:

Ecuador said Mexico granting asylum to former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas is illegal and demanded that the politician be extradited, the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

On Friday, the Mexican government decided to grant political asylum to Glas, who is now taking refuge at the country’s embassy in Quito.

According to the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry, in line with international agreements, it is illegal to provide asylum to people convicted of crimes.

“Granting diplomatic asylum is an illegal act and helps to avoid justice… The Mexican government must extradite Jorge Glas to face trial,” the ministry said.
