Iran condemns Israeli attack on Arak N-plant

Date:

Iran condemns Israel’s strike on the Arak heavy water reactor plant, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Friday, adding that Tel Aviv had targeted a safeguarded nuclear facility in violation of international law.

Araghchi urged the UN Security Council to enforce its own resolutions against military attacks on nuclear sites, warning that failure to respond would undermine the global non-proliferation system, reports Iran International.

The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed on Thursday that the reactor—while non-operational and containing no nuclear material—had sustained damage to key buildings, including the distillation unit.

The IAEA said there were no radiological consequences and that the adjacent heavy water production plant was not hit. However, its assessments stated that key buildings at the facility were damaged, including the distillation unit.

Israeli Air Force bombed the nuclear plant during a series of bombing runs on Thursday, with IDF officials confirming that they had targeted the Arak heavy water reactor’s core seal to stop it being used for “nuclear weapons development”.
