Jailed ex-Istanbul mayor Imamoglu nominated as Turkish opposition’s presidential candidate

Date:

The Republican People’s Party (CHP), the main opposition party in Türkiye, officially nominated the arrested former Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu as its presidential candidate on Thursday.

CHP Ozgur Ozel made the announcement after the Party Assembly meeting in Ankara.

“Ekrem Imamoglu has been designated as the presidential candidate of CHP by receiving all the votes from the 132 members in the closed ballot,” Ozel told reporters, broadcast live on the party’s social media accounts.

Türkiye’s next presidential elections will be held in 2028.

Imamoglu was formally arrested and suspended from office on Sunday on a corruption investigation initiated by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. Since then, he has been held at Marmara Prison in Istanbul’s Silivri district.
