Japanese FM visiting Kiev to discuss Ukraine’s rebuilding, support

 Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa is paying a visit to Kiev on Sunday to hold a meeting with her Ukrainian counterpart, Dmytro Kuleba, discuss an upcoming conference on Ukraine’s reconstruction and reaffirm Tokyo’s support to the country amid “severe” international situation, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said.

“On January 7, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan visits Ukraine and will hold meetings in Kyiv including with H.E. Mr. Dmytro KULEBA, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. During the visit, Minister Kamikawa will once again reiterate to the Ukrainian side that Japan’s consistent policy of standing with and supporting Ukraine remains unchanged even in the face of current severe international situation. Minister Kamikawa will also brief the Ukrainian side on the details of relevant assistance and plan of ours,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Japan’s top diplomat will also discuss the issues of holding the Japan-Ukraine Conference for Promotion of Economic Reconstruction in the Asian nation on February 19 and the efforts to achieve “a just and lasting peace” in Ukraine, the statement read. Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal will attend the conference, the statement said.

Additionally, Kamikawa will partake in the handover ceremony of large-scale power-related equipment for winterization assistance, the statement added.

Ukrainian Finance Minister Sergii Marchenko said that in 2023 alone, Ukraine had received over $42 billion. The European Union was the largest donor of financial aid to Ukraine last year, as it provided $19.93 billion to the country’s budget. It was followed by the United States with $10.9 billion and Japan with $3.7 billion.
