Myanmar junta executes 2 pro-democracy activists

Date:

Kyodo News quoted local media as stating that there had been no executions of political prisoners in Myanmar since 1976 and capital punishment was last carried out in 1990.

The four people executed include two political prisoners — Phyo Zeyar Thaw, a former lawmaker of Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy party, and Kyaw Min Yu, a prominent pro-democracy activist.

The military tribunals had sentenced the two to death in January over involvement in “terror acts” including murder.

The other two were reportedly charged for killing a woman who was an alleged military informant.

The United Nations, European countries and the United States as well as regional leaders, including Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, had called for the junta not to carry out the executions, Kyodo News reported.
