Amman, July 19 (IANS) Sirens have been activated in various regions in Jordan, state broadcaster the Jordan Radio and Television Corporation said Sunday on social media platform X.
Meanwhile, several media reports, citing the Israeli military, said Sunday that missiles launched from Iran toward southernmost Jordan’s coastal city of Aqaba were identified.
The military said the missiles have been intercepted by Israeli and Jordanian forces, according to the reports.
Earlier in the day, the US Embassy in Amman issued a security alert saying Aqaba’s airport and seaport had been evacuated due to a “specific and credible threat,” urging Americans to avoid travelling to the sites until further notice, Xinhua News Agency reported.
It also renewed its warning for Americans to avoid military bases in Jordan.
However, Jordanian authorities later denied the US embassy’s claim, saying both facilities are operating normally.
Jordan’s Minister of Government Communication Mohammad Al Momani said in a statement that the relevant authorities had not issued any decisions to evacuate the airport or the seaport, adding that Jordanian authorities will issue alerts in accordance with established procedures, including emergency sirens if needed.
The latest developments came amid heightened tensions in the Middle East as the United States and Iran have traded rounds of attacks. The United States has conducted eight waves of strikes on Iranian targets, while Iran has conducted strikes on US bases and facilities in several Gulf countries.
On Saturday, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said that it had attacked a US base in Jordan, targeted a fuel supply dock in Kuwait and destroyed a data centre in Bahrain, state media reported.
The Sahargah Corps Aerospace Force of the IRGC has conducted attacks on fighter jet shelters and a large parking ramp at the American base in Al-Azraq, Jordan, the news agency Sepah reported. It said that the attack destroyed at least two fighter jets and three American aircraft and caused major damage to some of them with a simultaneous missile and drone attack.
