Top diplomats of Japan, US, S Korea discussed upcoming trilateral summit

Date:

The top diplomats of Japan, the United States and South Korea – Yoshimasa Hayashi, Antony Blinken and Park Jin – held online talks to discuss an upcoming trilateral summit, due Friday, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“The ministers reaffirmed that the situation around the three countries is becoming increasingly tense, so the trilateral cooperation between Japan, the United States and South Korea is becoming increasingly important, not only in connection with North Korea, but also to maintain peace and stability in the region and beyond, as well as for realizing [the concept of] a free and open Indo-Pacific region,” the ministry said.

It said the ministers share the view that the upcoming trilateral summit on August 18 will be a historic opportunity for trilateral cooperation.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will travel to the United States on Thursday to attend the trilateral summit with the leaders of the United States and South Korea on August 18.
