Tunisia to hold presidential election on Sunday

Date:

Tunisians are voting in a presidential election on Sunday to choose between three candidates, one of them in prison, to head the North African country for the next five years.

Ayachi Zammel, the liberal leader of the Azimoun party, was jailed shortly before the voting day to serve over 12 years on electoral wrongdoing charges. The other candidate, Zouhair Magzhaoui of the left-wing nationalist People’s Movement, is widely seen as allied with the incumbent leader. None of them is expected to be any serious competition for President Kais Saied.

Saied came to power in 2019 and carried out a constitutional referendum in 2022, significantly expanding the powers of president and diminishing those of parliament, which many criticized as undemocratic.
