Yahya Sinwar named new Hamas chief

Date:

Following days of discussions, Hamas has named Yanha Sinwar as its new overall chief following the recent assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

An Hamas official told BBC that it has chosen Sinwar, a top leader of its political wing who is also known as “dead walking man”, to lead Hamas.

The announcement comes in the midst of escalating tensions in the middle east, as Iran and its allies vow to avenge Haniyeh’s death, for which they blamed Israel.

Sinwar’s name was announced after two-day extensive discussions among prominent Hamas leaders in Doha. The name of Mohammed Hassan was also considered.

Yanha currently tops Israel’s most wanted list. He is all on the US’s “international terrorists” blacklist.
