Agartala, 16th July 2025:  In a significant strike against drug trafficking, Tripura Police on Wednesday recovered over 1 lakh Yaba tablets valued at more than 11 crore in two coordinated operations across Khowai and West Tripura districts.

The first major seizure took place in Teliamura, Khowai District, during a routine vehicle check at the 41 Mile Naka Point. Acting on suspicion, police stopped an auto-rickshaw and detected a strong medicinal odour emanating from the vehicle. Senior officials, including Khowai Superintendent of Police Randitya Das and the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, were immediately called to the spot.

“Upon thorough inspection, our team uncovered 10 large black packets containing around 1 lakh Yaba tablets hidden in the auto,” said SDPO Panna Lal Sen. Two individuals — Suman Majumder and Bikas Deb — were taken into custody on the spot. Officials estimate the consignment’s street value at 10 crore. A case has been registered and an investigation is ongoing to uncover the broader network involved.

Meanwhile, in a separate but coordinated effort, a joint team comprising the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Assam Rifles, and Tripura Police intercepted a cement-loaded truck in the Khayerpur locality of Agartala. Hidden within sacks of cement, officers discovered 30 packets of Yaba tablets, estimated to be worth  1 crore. The truck driver managed to flee the scene and is currently on the run.

These twin seizures reflect a disturbing rise in narcotics smuggling through Tripura, which shares a porous international border with Bangladesh. Authorities have ramped up surveillance and border patrolling in response to the growing drug menace.
