Agartala, 16th July 2025:   A delegation from the Udaipur divisional committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) submitted a memorandum on Wednesday to the Deputy General Manager of the local electricity department, calling for the immediate cancellation of the smart meter initiative in Tripura. The delegation was led by party representative Partha Karmakar.

The party alleges that the smart meter rollout has severely impacted middle-class, working-class, and economically disadvantaged residents in both urban and rural areas of the state. Partha Karmakar described the meters as a source of “fear and financial distress” for the average consumer, citing unexpectedly high bills and doubts over billing accuracy.

The delegation expressed strong opposition to the mandatory rollout of smart meters, labeling it unacceptable for widespread implementation. Concerns were raised about the vulnerability of senior citizens and those uncomfortable with smartphones, who face a heightened risk of falling prey to online fraud. A comprehensive 12-point charter of demands was presented, addressing issues related to billing transparency and the accessibility of digital systems. Additionally, objections were made against the rising fuel charges specifically the ₹0.77 per unit hike and the recent surge in gas prices.

Karmakar emphasized that governments in West Bengal and Maharashtra have suspended smart meter installations, urging Tripura authorities to follow suit.

The CPI(ML) warned that failure to implement their demands promptly would trigger a larger statewide movement involving public participation.
