Agartala, 18th July 2025:   A tense standoff took place in front of the Shiksha Bhavan here today as members of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) Tripura State Committee launched a vigorous protest demanding reforms in the state’s higher education system.

Organized under the banner of a “Chalo Shiksha Bhavan” campaign, the protest centered around three key demands: timely conduct of semester examinations, proper implementation of academic calendars across colleges, and the assurance of student safety particularly for female students within educational institutions.

Earlier in the day, hundreds of student and youth activists marched through the city, converging outside Education Bhavan, where they were blocked by police barricades. Despite being denied entry into the premises, demonstrators held their ground and continued with their protest outside.

“The education system across Tripura is in disarray,” claimed a student leader participating in the demonstration. “Students are confused because the schedule for upcoming semester exams is being announced even before results of previous exams are published. It’s affecting around 30,000 students enrolled in degree colleges statewide.”

Citing the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines, the leader added that semester exams should ideally follow at least three months of academic instruction. “But several institutions are pushing for exams after just 10 to 15 days of classes. This isn’t just mismanagement—it’s detrimental to students’ futures,” they said.

Repeated attempts to meet higher education officials have allegedly been rebuffed, further fueling frustrations. “Authorities have shown zero accountability. That’s why we were compelled to organize today’s protest,” the youth leader remarked.

While police presence remained heavy throughout the demonstration, the protest remained peaceful, with SFI leaders vowing to continue their movement until the authorities take concrete action on their demands.
