Agartala, 21st July 2025:   Residents of Rangkang in Amarpur staged a road blockade demanding the withdrawal of smart meters and resolution of an ongoing drinking water crisis, citing a lack of faith in administrative assurances.

According to locals, the area has been facing severe issues with drinking water for an extended period. Despite repeated appeals to relevant departments for repairs and intervention, no concrete action has been taken. Residents reported that promises made by officials remain unfulfilled, leaving them without access to clean drinking water.

Compounding their distress, the recent installation of smart meters under the BJP-led government has led to excessively high electricity bills, placing a significant financial burden on households. Residents said the inflated bills were making it difficult to manage daily expenses.

Frustrated by the ongoing neglect and economic strain, the villagers resorted to blocking the road as a form of protest. Police reached the scene promptly following reports of the blockade. The demonstration was lifted after administrative representatives assured speedy redressal of the water supply issue and re-evaluation of the meter concerns.
