Agartala, 28th July 2025: The Tripura Pradesh Congress has launched a scathing attack on both the Centre and the state government over the deteriorating condition of education in the state, alleging deliberate neglect, rampant vacancies, and bureaucratic arrogance in addressing the long-pending teacher recruitment crisis.
In a strongly worded statement, the PCC held the BJP-led government at the Centre responsible for the commercialization and privatization of education through its rigid and industry-centric National Education Policy (NEP). It further accused the state government of implementing anti-education policies and taking “Tughlaq-like” decisions that have pushed Tripura’s government school system to the brink of collapse over the past seven-and-a-half years.
The Congress claimed that thousands of posts for teachers remain vacant across government schools, severely impacting classes in almost every institution. The situation in the ADC (Autonomous District Council) areas is reportedly dire, with over 300 schools functioning with only one teacher each. It was also alleged that there are no graduate teachers available for Classes 9 and 10 in many areas, leading to spontaneous road blockades by students demanding adequate teaching staff.
Citing government data, the party claimed students are failing to acquire even basic competencies, and the system continues to suffer from the mismanagement and corruption associated with the tenure of the previous Education Minister. As a result, many underprivileged families are pulling their children out of government schools and shifting to private institutions, while the youth face an uncertain future due to stalled recruitment.
A major point of contention remains the delay in the publication of the results of the STGT (Selection Test for Graduate Teachers) examination held in 2022. Congress alleged that the recruitment process for 350 graduate teacher posts has been frozen due to a court case over faulty implementation of the reservation policy. While the High Court directed the Education Department to rectify the reservation procedure and expedite recruitment, the department reportedly challenged the order in the Supreme Court—halting the process indefinitely.
The party said repeated appeals by the affected candidates to the government and even to the Chief Minister, who also holds the Education portfolio, have yielded no results. Many aspirants have already aged out of eligibility, while others are on the verge of losing the opportunity.
The Pradesh Congress also criticised the government’s recent announcement of 1,600 new teacher recruitments, calling it an attempt to divert attention from the real issues. It alleged that frequent cancellations of job notifications, re-advertisements, exam irregularities, and flawed implementation of reservation norms have become commonplace.
