Agartala, 11th August 2025: A journalist was allegedly assaulted by a suspected middleman inside the premises of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s (SDM) office in Dharmanagar this afternoon exposing the growing influence of illegal tout networks operating within government facilities.
It is reported that the incident took place around 1 PM when a group of media personnel visited the SDM office to investigate longstanding allegations of unauthorized activities. Local media personnel had previously raised concerns about middlemen allegedly facilitating the creation of Aadhaar cards and other official documents for Bangladeshi nationals in exchange for large sums of money.
During the visit, the media personnel encountered the accused identified as Bijon Ghosh, who reportedly fled into a room upon noticing them. When one of the journalists attempted to verify his identity, Ghosh allegedly became aggressive, tried to snatch the journalist’s camera and attempted to escape. However, fellow journalists managed to restrain him and immediately alerted Dharmanagar police.
Responding swiftly, newly appointed Officer-in-Charge Minar Debbarma dispatched a team to the scene. Ghosh was taken into custody and brought to the police station for further investigation.
The incident has sparked outrage among the local press community, who condemned the attack and criticized the administration for failing to curb the influence of illegal agents within government offices. “This brazen assault in a government compound is not just an attack on press freedom—it’s a glaring sign of administrative negligence,” said one senior journalist.
As the investigation takes place, questions are mounting over the extent of the alleged racket and the identities of those enabling it. Journalists and civil society groups are now urging authorities to take decisive action against the network and ensure the safety of media personnel operating in the sub-division.
