Agartala, 11th August 2025:  Former Tripura MLA Tapas Dey has urged Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha to introduce honorarium and pension benefits for members of Local Self-Government bodies, including Panchayat and municipal representatives.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, Dey described these grassroots leaders as “the front face of the State Government,” noting their role as first responders during epidemics, natural disasters, and other emergencies. He said they often act swiftly to provide relief and restore normalcy even before the larger administrative machinery comes into action.

Pointing out the disparity between MLAs, MPs, and Ministers—who receive salaries and pensionary benefits—and local body members, who do not, Dey termed the situation “striking and unjust.”

He argued that fair remuneration and post-service security would not only strengthen grassroots democracy but also reduce corruption risks, attract capable youth and professionals to public service, ensure continuity in leadership, and uphold the dignity of local representatives.

“The time has come to honour those who uphold the pillars of our society, not merely with words, but with tangible recognition and security,” Dey wrote, expressing hope that the Chief Minister would give the proposal due consideration.
