PMJDY turns 11: Shah hails scheme as historic step towards empowering poor, marginalised

Date:

On the 11th anniversary of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), Home Minister Amit Shah today lauded the initiative as a historic step in empowering millions of Indians, especially poor, women, farmers, and marginalized communities, by bringing them into the formal banking system.
“Exactly 11 years ago from today, Prime Minister Modi launched the world’s largest financial inclusion initiative in history, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, aimed at empowering the poor, women, farmers and the marginalized,” Shah said on X.
He said, “Through the 11 years of Jan Dhan, a historic effort was made to connect a large section of the country to banking facilities, which had been deprived of it for decades”.
Highlighting the massive reach of the programme, Shah said, “Today, over 56 crore Jan Dhan beneficiaries, of whom nearly 56 percent are women, are directly availing the benefits of various government schemes such as banking, insurance, and pension, and are actively contributing to the vision of a developed and self-reliant India”.
Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 28, 2014, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana today completed 11 years of transformative influence on India’s financial ecosystem.
Over the past 11 years, PMJDY had catalyzed both transformational and directional change, strengthening the banking ecosystem to serve even the poorest and most remote citizens. It has become a cornerstone for Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT), enabling transparent, efficient, and corruption-free delivery of government subsidies and payments.
