Agartala, 24th June 2026: Tension gripped Madhupur market under Kamalasagar constituency today as the administration launched a major eviction drive to free government land from long-standing encroachments. The operation, led by the DCM of Bishalgarh along with senior officials and a large police contingent, faced stiff resistance from local traders.
According to officials, nearly 115 shops had illegally occupied government land for years, narrowing the market space and causing severe traffic congestion. Traders, however, alleged they were not given prior written notice of the eviction. The DCM refuted this claim, asserting that notices had been served twice, yet no action was taken to vacate the land.
As tempers flared, traders demanded at least seven days’ time. Following urgent discussions, the administration announced two clear ultimatums. All footpath shops must be removed within three days, while permanent structures are to be demolished within seven days.
The DCM warned that failure to comply would lead to bulldozers razing all illegal establishments after the deadline, with legal action to follow.
This confrontation has spotlighted the growing clash between public interest and traders’ demands, setting the stage for a decisive showdown in Madhupur market.
