Agartala, 30th August 2025:    A 19-year-old woman from South Tripura’s Dimatali area has died after allegedly being set on fire by her in-laws over a dowry dispute involving a gold ring. The victim Pooja Debnath succumbed to her injuries yesterday while undergoing treatment at GB Hospital in Agartala.

Speaking from the hospital morgue, her father claimed that Pooja was repeatedly harassed by her husband’s family for not receiving a gold ring during her marriage to Rakesh Debnath. According to him, the abuse escalated over time, forcing Pooja to return to her parental home twice before being sent back to her husband’s residence.

The fatal incident reportedly took place late at night when neighbors alerted the family that Pooja had been severely burned. She was initially rushed to Radhanagar Hospital and subsequently referred through a series of facilities Belonia Sub-Divisional Hospital, South Tripura District Hospital and finally GB Hospital, where she died during treatment.

Her husband Rakesh is also hospitalized with burn injuries. The father alleges that Rakesh set Pooja on fire but later attempted to save her resulting in his own injuries.

Following a post-mortem examination today, Pooja’s body was handed over to her family. Grief-stricken relatives broke down as they received her remains. Her father has demanded strict punishment for those responsible for her death.
