Agartala, 1st September 2025; A wave of student-led protest erupted once again in Laljuri, Kanchanpur as hundreds of schoolchildren from Ujan Machmara High School staged a road blockade this morning, demanding urgent teacher appointments in their school.
Beginning at 7 am, students gathered along the busy Kanchanpur-Dharmanagar road chanting slogans like “We want a teacher” and bringing traffic to a standstill. The protest lasted until noon, caused severe disruption, with long queues of vehicles stretching on both sides of the road. Government employees and daily commuters were among those caught in the gridlock.
Despite having over 200 enrolled students, the school reportedly operates with only seven teachers across both primary and secondary sections. Students allege that classes are frequently canceled due to the shortage, leaving them deprived of basic education. Repeated appeals to the administration have gone unanswered, prompting them to take to the streets in desperation.
Following the blockade, district education officials intervened. Acting on instructions from P. Ranjan Tripura, Education officer Samir Ranjan Nath arrived at the protest site and issued a written assurance to address the issue. The students lifted the blockade around 12 p.m., but not without raising deeper concerns.
The incident has sparked broader questions about the state of public education in Tripura. Local intellectuals and leaders are voicing alarm over the recurring need for student protests to demand basic educational resources. “Is the administration’s assurance merely a delay tactic? If immediate action isn’t taken, these student movements may escalate further” one local commentator asked.
