Agartala, 1st September 2025; The Agartala-Udaipur stretch of National Highway 08 continues to deteriorate, drawing widespread criticism from daily commuters, transport operators and even state ministers. The road’s crumbling condition marked by potholes, waterlogging and uneven elevations has become a daily hazard for thousands.
Several areas along the Agartala-Udaipur National Highway are facing severe infrastructural challenges. The regions surrounding Udaipur, Dhwajanagar, Police Line and Tepania Eco Park are particularly affected with road surfaces deteriorating rapidly. Near the Brahma Bari CNG station, even light rainfall has led to persistent flooding, causing major disruptions for both vehicles and pedestrians. Additionally, drainage overflow near the Dhwajanagar Police Line frequently inundates the roadway, further aggravating the situation and raising concerns about long-term neglect.
Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy has publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the central construction agency responsible for highway maintenance. While a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a new four-lane highway from Khowai to Matabari via Mohanpur and Kamalasagar has been prepared, Roy clarified that the state’s Public Works Department has no jurisdiction over national highway repairs.
“I’ve personally urged the central agency to fix the roads. But the ground reality shows little progress. The current state of the highway is not just inconvenient, it’s dangerous,” Roy stated.
Local drivers allege that the construction agency has resorted to patchwork repairs, which fail to withstand even minor weather events. In areas like Ramesh Chowmuhani, Bridge Corner, Brahma Bari, and Matabari, roads have been raised unscientifically, creating uneven surfaces that worsen during rains as the soil washes away.
The Netaji Subhash Bridge in Udaipur has reportedly developed cracks in multiple sections, raising safety concerns among residents and commuters.
Citizens and local leaders are now calling for urgent reconstruction of the highway from Agartala to Sabroom, emphasizing the need for durable infrastructure and accountability from the central construction authorities.
