Agartala, 8th September 2025 : The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has directed the Director General of Police (DGP), Tripura, to submit a report on allegations of police negligence in a motor accident case that eventually claimed the life of a youth in Gomati district.
The case was brought to the Commission through a complaint lodged by Pintu Paul, a resident of East Dhajanagar. He alleged that his elder brother, Suman Paul, died on January 7, 2025, following severe complications from injuries sustained in a road accident on October 17, 2024.
According to the complaint, the accident took place near Gokulpur Shastriji Sangha when a motorcycle (TR-03-M 6307) collided with an auto (TR-03-C 2523). The motorcyclist was initially treated at Udaipur District Hospital and later by private practitioners. However, in December 2024, his condition worsened due to a blood clot in the head. Despite undergoing surgery at ILS Hospital, Agartala, and later receiving treatment at GBP & AGMC Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries in early January.
The complainant further alleged that despite repeated attempts to file a case under Section 154 CrPC against the auto driver for rash and negligent driving, the officer-in-charge of R.K. Pur Police Station refused to register an FIR. A written representation submitted to the Superintendent of Police, Gomati district, on September 2, 2025, also failed to yield any action.
Taking cognizance of the complaint, THRC Chairperson Justice Arindam Lodh observed that the matter indicated serious lapses on the part of the police authorities. The Commission has forwarded a copy of the complaint to the DGP, Tripura, seeking a detailed response within three weeks. The case is scheduled for its next hearing on October 13, 2025.
