Agartala, 10th September 2025:Indigenous Youths Show Black Flags to LoPTension flared in Tripura’s Dhalai district on Wednesday after a group of indigenous youths staged a protest against Leader of Opposition and CPIM state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury, accusing him of disrespecting Risha—the traditional handwoven attire that holds deep cultural significance for the tribal community.

The protest broke out at Nailaha Bari along the National Highway in Ambassa when Chaudhury’s convoy was on its way to attend a party programme. Anticipating unrest, security forces and TSR personnel had been deployed in the area.As the convoy reached the spot, around 100 indigenous men and women blocked the road, waved black flags, and raised “go back” slogans. The blockade lasted for nearly half an hour before police intervened and escorted Chaudhury away.

“Jitendra Chaudhury has insulted Risha. He must apologize. Otherwise, we will intensify the agitation across the state,” one of the protesters told reporters.Reacting to the incident, Chaudhury rejected the allegations, calling them a campaign of misinformation by the BJP’s Janajati Morcha.

“When I was the Information and Cultural Affairs Minister, I officially introduced Risha in Tripura. Even today, I carry a Risha along my spine—it symbolizes respect for the tribals and keeps the spine straight against the BJP,” he said.Chaudhury further claimed the protest was politically orchestrated. “The BJP is losing ground, and that is why they staged this drama. If they are so concerned about democracy, why are they not holding village committee elections?” he asked.
