Madhupur hospital doctor removed amid misconduct allegations

Agartala, 11th September 2025:    A series of allegations against Dr. Arpan Debbarma, posted as MOIC at Madhupur Primary Health Centre for the past seven to eight months, has culminated in his transfer following public outrage and departmental inquiry. The controversy, which had been simmering since a report was published on August 19 intensified after locals accused the doctor of repeated misconduct and absenteeism.

Dr. Debbarma, previously posted at Maikuchapara PHC in Sepahijala district, was transferred to Madhupur after a video surfaced showing him allegedly consuming alcohol inside hospital premises during daytime, accompanied by nursing staff. Despite the change in location, residents claim his behaviour remained unchanged, with frequent absences and alleged drinking sessions within hospital grounds.

The situation worsened with reports of patients being treated by trainee doctors during night hours due to the doctor’s absence. Locals also highlighted unsanitary conditions, including stray dogs entering the hospital alongside patients, which was reportedly captured on camera.

Adding to the controversy, Ayushman Mitra, another staff member at the hospital and reportedly linked to political circles was recently detained by Amtali police for allegedly attempting to smuggle garments across the Bangladesh border. His presence at the hospital, along with Dr. Debbarma, further fueled public dissatisfaction.

Following sustained media coverage and mounting pressure, the Director of Health Services conducted an on-site inspection at Madhupur Hospital on September 08 last. The inquiry reportedly confirmed several of the allegations, leading to Dr. Debbarma’s transfer to Khedacherra Hospital.

However, the transfer sparked a brief road blockade at Madhupur Chowmuhani today, allegedly staged by a group of youths reportedly incentivized with money. The blockade was lifted only after Kamalasagar Mandal President Kajal Sarkar assured protesters that the transfer would be reconsidered.

This intervention has raised serious questions about administrative authority. Locals are now asking whether the health department is being run by political figures rather than designated officials. If the Mandal president’s assurance leads to reversal of the transfer, it could signal a troubling precedent of political interference in public health administration.
