Pradyot to Move Supreme Court Over Land and Customary Rights of Indigenous People

Agartala, 16th October 2025:  Tipra Motha Party founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma announced on Thursday that he will file a petition in the Supreme Court seeking justice for Tripura’s indigenous communities over their land and customary rights, which he claims have been neglected by successive governments.

In a Facebook post, Pradyot criticized the administrative system, saying that District Magistrates (DMs) should not decide the fate of indigenous people based on instructions from their superiors.

“Tomorrow I am going to file another case in the Supreme Court regarding our land and customary bills which have been denied to the indigenous people by successive governments. DM cannot decide the fate of our people at the instruction of their bosses,” he wrote.

He further emphasized that the Governor, being the custodian of the Sixth Schedule, must act in the best interests of Tripura’s indigenous population. Pradyot also expressed gratitude to the officers and lawyers who helped him prepare the case, acknowledging that they took significant risks to support the cause.

Earlier, Pradyot had highlighted that the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) lacks adequate powers over land rights. He alleged that despite promises of direct central funding, the funds are withheld and politicized.

“When we speak with the state government, they say if you join BJP, you will get the fund. When Congress comes to power, they say, ‘Join Congress and take the fund,’ and CPI(M) says the same. We are forced to bow before national parties for our rights,” he said.

Pradyot contrasted Tripura’s situation with that of other northeastern states, noting that in Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland, indigenous communities control their land, whereas in Tripura, land allocation remains under the authority of the District Magistrate.
