Agartala, 7th November 2025:. A tragic accident involving a school bus took place this afternoon around 2 PM in the Madhuban Kathaltali Bypass area, leaving one pedestrian dead and eleven students injured.
The bus belonging to Montfort School was returning from school when it reportedly lost control while attempting to avoid hitting a woman crossing the road. The vehicle broke through roadside railings and crashed. The deceased, identified as Khela Sarkar, a resident of the Rail Bridge locality, was out feeding her goat as part of her daily routine when the incident took place.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud crash and rushed out of their homes to find the bus overturned and Sarkar lying on the road. Local residents quickly began rescue efforts, followed by the arrival of fire service personnel who transported the injured students to Tripura Medical College and Dr BR Ambedkar Teaching Hospital. The bus bore registration number TR01-4324. The driver fled the scene immediately after the crash.
No pedestrians witnessed the exact moment of the accident, making it difficult to determine the precise sequence of events. Coincidentally, MP Rajib Bhattacharjee was passing through the area at the time and stopped to inquire about the situation.
Hospital sources informed that seven to eight of the injured students sustained serious injuries. Sarkar was taken to GB Hospital, where doctors declared her dead upon arrival.
Amtali police station staff have seized the vehicle and launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha has expressed concern over the tragic school bus accident that occurred near the rail bridge on Amtali bypass road in Agartala, leaving several students injured.
“I have come to know about the news of several students of a private school being injured in a tragic bus accident that took place in the area adjacent to the rail bridge on the Amtali bypass road in Agartala,” Dr Saha said in a statement issued this evening.
The Chief Minister confirmed that he has already sought detailed updates on the medical treatment being provided to the injured students. “I have already made detailed inquiries about the treatment of the injured students. I wish them a speedy recovery,” he added.
Dr Saha also assured that appropriate steps are being taken to investigate the incident. “Along with this, the police administration has been instructed to take necessary action after investigation,” he stated.
