Stagnant drains and piled garbage spark dengue fears at Padmapur

Agartala, 25th November 2025:    Accumulated garbage and stagnant water in multiple drains across the municipal area have become a serious public health hazard, with residents warning of a surge in mosquito-borne diseases.

On Padmapur Harichand Road, drains have reportedly not been cleaned for months, leading to severe mosquito infestation. Locals fear the unchecked breeding grounds could trigger outbreaks of dengue and malaria.

Hospitals in the Panisagar subdivision are already witnessing a rise in suspected dengue cases. At Tilthai and Bungraang hospitals, patients ranging from 8 to 80 years old are undergoing treatment for dengue-like symptoms. Local MLA Shailendra Nath visited the facilities to review the situation.

Residents allege that no drain-cleaning has been carried out in recent months, leaving the drainage system clogged and dysfunctional. “The entire council has turned into a mosquito hub. After dusk, stepping outside becomes unbearable. From children to the elderly, everyone is living in fear of dengue and malaria. Despite repeated complaints, no effective measures have been taken—only assurances,” said one resident.

Locals further claim that influential individuals have downplayed the severity of the issue, worsening the plight of ordinary citizens.

The problem is not confined to Padmapur Harichand Road. Similar conditions prevail across other wards, where potholes filled with stagnant water are accelerating mosquito breeding. During the monsoon, the situation worsens as dirty water overflows onto streets and even enters homes.

Residents are demanding immediate drain clearance, removal of stagnant water, and chemical spraying to curb mosquito populations. They have urged the administration to intervene swiftly before the situation escalates further.
