Agartala, 6th December 2025: A school student was seriously injured after being attacked with a sharp machete by his intoxicated neighbor in the Govardhan Para area of Jagatpur, Mohanpur. The incident took place on Friday morning, sparking outrage among local residents.
The injured youth has been identified as Debraj Debnath, a Class XII student. His mother, Alpana Debnath, also sustained injuries during the assault.
According to witnesses, the attacker, Dipak Sutradhar, a local youth allegedly addicted to intoxicants, frequently harasses the Debnath family while under the influence. On Friday morning, Dipak reportedly entered their house armed with a machete after hurling abuses at the family. He then attacked Debraj and his mother, striking Debraj on the shoulder and hand.
Hearing the commotion, locals rushed to the spot, restrained the assailant, and subjected him to a mob beating before handing him over to police. Both the injured victims and the attacker were taken to Mohanpur Community Health Centre for treatment.
Police from Sidhai Police Station arrived promptly and took Dipak Sutradhar into custody. Residents allege that Dipak has long been creating disturbances in the neighborhood under the influence of drugs.
Authorities are investigating the matter further.
