Agartala, 8th December 2025:  Hundreds of workers from the Mid-Day Meal Workers’ Union, ASHA Workers’ Union, and Anganwadi Workers’ Union, all affiliated with CITU, staged a protest in the Office Lane area of Agartala on Monday. The demonstration was held to press for multiple demands, including the scrapping of the labour codes and increased budget allocations for welfare projects.

Carrying placards and banners, the workers voiced strong opposition to what they termed the government’s “anti-labour policies” and the precarious conditions faced by project-based employees.

Speaking at the protest, union member Panchali Bhattacharya said that despite long-standing demands, government apathy has deprived workers of their rightful entitlements. “With the Union Budget around the corner, all eyes are on the allocations. We demand cancellation of the labour codes, fixation of minimum wages for project-based workers, enhanced social security coverage, and increased budgetary support,” she stated.

Bhattacharya further emphasized the need for service rules for project workers, timely payment of monthly wages, and protection against excessive workload, particularly for Anganwadi staff. She also called for provisions such as EMI relief, gratuity, and comprehensive social security benefits.

The protest saw participation from over a hundred Mid-Day Meal, ASHA, and Anganwadi workers. Union representatives warned that if their demands remain unmet, they are prepared to intensify the agitation in the coming days.
