Advanced Cardiology Care at GB Restores Patient’s Mobility and Health

Agartala, 9th December 2025:   A 56-year-old patient from Sonamura has been given a new lease on life for the expertise and timely intervention of the Cardiology Department at Agartala Government Medical College & GBP Hospital.

The patient had been suffering for six long months with severe pain in both legs, which worsened during walking and often prevented him from sleeping at night. Over the past month, the condition deteriorated sharply as blood flow to both legs became critically restricted.

Under the supervision of Consultant Cardiologist Dr. Rakesh Das, treatment began at GBP Hospital. On 17 November 2025, Dr. Das performed an angiography, which revealed that the arteries in both legs had dried up and narrowed severely — a classic presentation of Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) or Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD).

This condition involves the narrowing or obstruction of arteries located outside the heart and brain. In this case, the patient’s right leg artery was found to be nearly 100% blocked from its origin down to the knee.

Recognizing the urgency, Dr. Das advised immediate intervention. Accordingly, on 2 December 2025, a stent was placed in the affected artery to restore blood flow. Remarkably, the procedure required no surgical incisions, highlighting the department’s ability to perform advanced minimally invasive interventions. Following the procedure, the patient made a swift recovery, regaining normal walking ability and experiencing fully restored blood circulation in both legs. He was discharged from the hospital on 4 December 2025.

The entire procedure was carried out completely free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, a significant relief for the patient’s family. A similar procedure in a private hospital would have cost nearly Rs 3 lakh.

The medical team involved in this successful intervention included Consultant Cardiologist Dr. Rakesh Das, Associate Professor and Head of the Department Dr. Anindya Sundar Tribedi, Cardiologist Dr. Manna Bhattacharjee, and Junior Doctors Dr. Arghya Pratim Nath, Dr. Anvesha Debnath, Dr. Prantik Roy, along with Cath Lab Technician Sanjay Ghosh, Cath Lab Nurses Debabrata Debnath, Prankrishna Deb, Manas Dutta, Titiksha Majumder, and Echo Technician Kishan Roy.

The patient’s family expressed heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and the entire healthcare team for providing world-class treatment within the state, eliminating the need for costly treatment outside Tripura.
