Agartala, 2nd January 2026: A controversy erupted in Udaipur on New Year’s Eve after a local youth accused police and TSR personnel of physically assaulting him. The incident initially sparked public outrage, but the release of a video footage later cast doubt on the veracity of the claims.
The complainant, identified as Tapas Saha (31), a resident near the Bonduar Electric Office, alleged that he was brutally beaten by officers of R.K. Pur police station and TSR while returning home late Wednesday night. Saha said he had admitted his pregnant wife to Gomati District Hospital earlier that evening and was riding back to town on his motorcycle bearing registration number TR03N-5352 with another youth as pillion.
According to his complaint, after crossing Netaji Subhash Bridge around 11:30 pm, police patrol personnel stopped him without reason, assaulted him, and left him with a head injury. He was later admitted to hospital. Saha, who claims to be an active worker of the ruling party, announced plans to stage a protest and gherao the police station with party supporters the following day.
However, the situation took a dramatic turn when a 19-second video clip of the incident surfaced. The footage shows Saha telling someone over the phone that he was stopped for riding without a helmet. It further depicts him becoming agitated and incoherent when questioned by police about his behavior. The video also shows him attempting to flee on his motorcycle despite police intervention, eventually falling and sustaining a head injury.
Reports suggest that in the process of restraining him, two TSR personnel Rifleman Harendra Reang and Dibantar Jamatia of the 5th Battalion were also injured and required treatment at Tripurasundari Sub-Divisional Hospital.
The video has raised serious questions about Saha’s allegations of custodial assault. Instead, counterclaims have emerged that he was intoxicated, misbehaved with police, attempted to attack security personnel, and sought to leverage political influence.
Authorities and observers maintain that the truth behind the incident can only be established through an impartial and detailed investigation.
