Agartala, 2nd January 2026: Concerns over law and order have intensified in Dashamighat, Agartala, where residents allege that a mafia-like regime has taken root under the patronage of a local club. For several years, locals claim, the area has been plagued by disorder and insecurity.
On December 29, a group of 20–25 youths, allegedly led by Ranbir Guha, Adhiraj Dutta, and Prakash Choudhury, attacked a citizen in Dashamighat. Witnesses say the incident began near Joynagar JPC Club when a rickshaw driver lost control and collided with a scooter. A dispute followed, during which the scooter rider allegedly assaulted the rickshaw puller.
Local guardian Swapan Roy, who tried to intervene and mediate, was reportedly attacked after the scooter rider summoned reinforcements from Dashamighat. A mob of youths arrived and assaulted Roy, along with several other guardians who attempted to protect him. Among those named in the attack was Prakash Choudhury.
Following the incident, Joynagar residents lodged complaints at West Agartala Police Station, demanding the arrest of the accused. Locals alleged that the group of intoxicated miscreants assaulted at least three people recklessly that night.
Police later detained Prakash Choudhury and produced him before court, which remanded him to three days in police custody. Choudhury, now undergoing treatment at GB Hospital, denied involvement when confronted by the media personnel today. Speaking from his hospital bed, he demanded that CCTV footage be reviewed to prove his innocence.
Residents allege that such groups are frequently seen roaming the area after 10 pm, often in vehicles without registration numbers, spreading fear and disorder.
