Contractor’s assault sparks chaos after road accident at Bishramganj checkpoint

Agartala, 5^th January 2026:   Tension erupted on National Highway near Bishramganj police checkpoint following a collision between a bus and a small car. The incident quickly escalated when the car’s driver identified as contractor Sujit Saha of Usha Bazar, Agartala allegedly stormed into the bus and assaulted its driver Indrajit Debnath and conductor Jalil Mia.

Locals informed that the accident took place when a bus bearing registration number TR07-1213, traveling from Agartala to Sonamura, rammed into the rear of a Maruti WagonR bearing registration TR01AW-0674. The impact shattered the WagonR’s rear windshield, causing panic among commuters and triggering a traffic jam on the busy highway.

Passengers reported that immediately after the crash, Sujit Saha exited his vehicle and entered the bus, physically attacking the driver and conductor. Police sources further alleged that Saha misbehaved with ASI Kanu Debnath, who was on routine duty at the checkpoint.

On receiving information, OC Ajit Debbarma rushed to the spot, bringing the bus driver and conductor to the police station for safety. The damaged vehicles were moved to a secure location, while passengers were shifted to other buses to continue their journey. Two WagonR passengers were sent to Bishramganj Hospital for treatment.

The situation, which had briefly turned volatile, was brought under control by police intervention. Traffic flow on the highway was restored soon after.

Local people accounts remain divided, with bus passengers claiming that the WagonR was speeding, overtaking several vehicles before suddenly stopping in front of the bus, leaving the driver no chance to avoid collision, while contractor Sujit Saha insisted the bus was at fault, alleging it struck their car at high speed and stating, “We narrowly escaped with our lives.”

Police confirmed that Saha also behaved aggressively with officers during the incident. As of press time, both drivers, the bus conductor and contractor Sujit Saha remained at Bishramganj police station for further inquiry.
