Agartala, 7th January 2026 : A series of thefts at the closed Hotel Raat Din, located in the heart of Dharmanagar town, along with a recent break-in at an adjacent residence, has sparked widespread concern among residents and raised questions about the role of the subdivision police.
For nearly two years, the hotel has remained shut following ownership changes after its first proprietor defaulted on bank loans. The current owner, reportedly based in Agartala, has not reopened the property, leaving it vulnerable. Locals allege that thieves have repeatedly targeted the premises, stealing air conditioners and other valuables.
The latest incident took place late last night when burglars broke into the house of Raju Gupta, situated next to the hotel. Gupta passed away recently, and his family members were away at the time, leaving the house vacant. Police later recovered a large iron rod from the site, believed to have been used to break grills and iron fixtures. Fortunately, no major items were reported stolen.
This morning, news of the hotel theft reached Dharmanagar police, who promptly visited the scene and began an investigation. Sub-Inspector Tapan Das confirmed that while no prior written complaints had been filed by Gupta’s family, police are treating the matter seriously and working to identify the culprits.
However, residents remain alarmed. They allege that abandoned houses and closed commercial establishments in the town center have become safe havens for criminal gangs. Calls for increased police patrols and surveillance have grown louder.
Locals further claim that complaints about thefts at the hotel had been lodged multiple times over the past seven months, yet no visible action was taken. Sub-Inspector Das admitted that police had been aware of the incidents for six to seven months.
This revelation has intensified public frustration, with residents now openly questioning why the police remained silent despite knowing about the thefts for months.
