Agartala, 9th January 2026: The Left Front is set to launch a protest against the VB G RAM G Act, with CPI(M) announcing its plans today at a press conference held at the party’s state office.
CPI(M) state secretary and Leader of the Opposition in the state, Jitendra Chaudhury, outlined the party’s opposition to the government’s move.
Chaudhury said that since independence, MNREGA has been one of the most important employment opportunities for workers, guaranteeing 100 days of work. “The Narendra Modi-led government has opposed MNREGA from the beginning. In Tripura too, the ruling BJP, through negligent officials, has disrupted MNREGA, setting back the rural economy,” he said.
He added that although the law could not be repealed in the last 11 years, the government is now moving to abolish it and implement the VB G RAM G. Chaudhury accused the current government of aiming to remove Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the program, citing their “extreme disrespect” for the leader.
The government claims that the new law will increase workdays from 100 to 125, but Chaudhury called this promise “completely false,” noting that previous commitments were not fulfilled.
In response, all Left Front organizations have decided to take the protest to every household. The party plans to demand from the government the repeal of the new law, reinstatement of MNREGA, assurance of 200 days of work, and a wage of Rs 600 per worker.
