On Melaghar–Kakraban route: Political leaders’ influence threatens auto services

Agartala, 13th January 2026:  Severe uncertainty has gripped the Melaghar–Kakraban route as auto-rickshaw operations face restrictions despite drivers holding valid permits. Allegations have surfaced that the Kakraban BMS branch has imposed a ban on Melaghar autos using its road network, sparking outrage among drivers and the Melaghar BMS unit.

According to complaints, the Kakraban BMS branch in Gomati district has been accused of irregular and unethical practices. Drivers with valid permits for the Melaghar–Kakraban route via Taibandal claim they are allowed to carry passengers to Kakraban, but on their return journey, the Kakraban BMS branch refuses to issue numbers or clearance. As a result, auto-rickshaw operators are facing obstacles in continuing service on the route.

Auto drivers argue that the decision is illegal and unjust, given their valid permits. Despite repeated communications from the Melaghar BMS unit, the Kakraban branch has allegedly refused to comply. In response, the Melaghar BMS has appealed to the Chief Minister, demanding immediate intervention to end what they describe as “unethical practices” and to restore normal auto services on the route.

The issue was highlighted during a meeting at the Melaghar BMS office, where Biplab Majumder, President of Melaghar BMS, Bablu Mia, Secretary of Bus and Jeep Services, and Sudip Das, Secretary of the Sepahijala Tripura Auto Rickshaw Mazdoor Sangh (Melaghar unit), jointly voiced their concerns. All leaders demanded justice and an end to the Kakraban branch’s alleged misconduct.

Meanwhile, drivers warn that if the matter is not resolved swiftly, auto services on the Melaghar–Kakraban route could be completely disrupted, severely affecting daily commuters and local passengers.
