Agartala, 30th January 2026: On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s death anniversary, the Pradesh Congress on Friday staged a four-hour sit-in demonstration in front of the party headquarters, protesting the cancellation of the MGNREGA scheme.

Earlier in the day, party leaders paid floral tributes to Gandhi’s portrait at the Pradesh Congress Bhavan. They later visited the Shaheed Bedi at Gandhi Ghat, where they offered flowers and paid homage to the Father of the Nation.

As part of the “Save MGNREGA” campaign, Congress workers and leaders organized another three-hour sit-in outside the party office, voicing strong opposition to the government’s decision.

Addressing the gathering, Pradesh Congress president Ashish Kumar Saha said, “Bapu’s ideals continue to inspire us in the path of justice, peace, and democratic rights. But the present BJP government is insulting Gandhi’s principles.”

He alleged that the government has scrapped MGNREGA and introduced the new VB-G Ram Ji scheme, which he described as “anti-poor and against the interests of the underprivileged.” Saha emphasized that MGNREGA had greatly benefited rural laborers and poor communities, warning that its cancellation would severely harm them.

The Congress leader demanded the immediate withdrawal of the decision to abolish MGNREGA.
