Cattle theft resurfaces at Kanchanmala, farmers demand stronger security

Agartala, 31st January 2026:    The menace of cattle theft has once again gripped Kanchanmala under the Golaghati assembly constituency. Last night, three cows were stolen from two households near Lakshichara Ramkrishna Higher Secondary School, sparking outrage among local farmers.

According to reports, residents Ananta Roy and Tapu Biswas, who had been rearing cattle for years, secured their animals in the cowshed as usual before going to bed. However, on Saturday morning, they discovered the cows missing. While searching the area, they found cut ropes and cow dung near the school playground gallery, confirming that thieves had taken away the animals.

Alarmed by the incident, the victims raised a hue and neighbors rushed to the spot. The matter was immediately reported to Amtali Police Station, and investigations into the thieves’ movements have begun.

Speaking to journalists, the affected farmers revealed that cattle thefts have occurred repeatedly in Kanchanmala. They noted that such incidents often rise when cattle-laden trucks pass through the area for smuggling purposes. After a brief lull, daily smuggling activities via Kanchanmala and Kolkalia have resumed, coinciding with the resurgence of thefts.

The farmers also pointed out that although a long-standing security camp exists near the school, it is manned by only two personnel. They argued that adequate deployment of security forces could have prevented such crimes.

Expressing anger, the cattle owners criticized the police for showing greater zeal in stopping sand-laden trucks and penalizing bikers, while failing to act decisively against thieves. They have demanded that the police administration strengthen the local security camp and take strict measures to recover the stolen cattle.
