Agartala, 31st January 2026: The All Tripura Blind Association (ATBA) has submitted a deputation to the Director of Elementary Education, pressing a seven-point charter of demands to safeguard the interests of visually impaired teachers and students.
The organization, active since 1984, stated that it has been working for the welfare of the blind community through initiatives in education, health, culture, sports, awareness camps, and deputations, aiming to integrate visually impaired individuals into the mainstream of society.
Among the key demands are: Appointment of a Grievance Redressal Officer in the Elementary Education Department to address complaints of disabled employees; Provision of Braille books and question papers in schools where visually impaired teachers are employed; Annual five-day special training programs for blind teachers; and Strict enforcement of the 4% reservation policy in recruitment and promotion.
The association also urged the government to ensure accessible infrastructure in all government and private schools in line with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. This includes tactile designs, scientific ramps, and Braille displays.
Further, ATBA demanded awareness training on disability rights for all head teachers and staff under the Elementary Education Department.
Finally, the association called for immediate issuance of certificates to visually impaired teachers who completed their diplomas from NIOS during the 2017–2019 academic sessions but have yet to receive official recognition.
