Agartala, 13th February 2026:   Following a direct inspection by Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, authorities have ordered a thorough investigation into the mushrooming stone crushers at Churaibari. Concerns had been raised in the media that the rapid growth of these units was endangering public health and daily life in the area.

Residents complained that the machines produced unbearable noise and released large amounts of dust, making breathing difficult. Doctors also warned that prolonged exposure to such conditions was causing ear, lung, and other health problems among children, youth, and the elderly.

After years of neglect, the Pollution Control Board finally initiated an inquiry into the Churaibari stone crushers. Recently, notices were served to 103 crusher owners, asking them to produce valid documents. Most failed to do so.

As part of a joint drive by the Pollution Control Board, North District Administration, and Dharmanagar Sub-Division authorities, 25 illegal units were shut down on February 10, 2026, followed by another 27 on February 13. In total, 52 stone crushers have now been sealed, while investigations into the remaining units continue.

Locals expressed relief, saying the crackdown should have come much earlier. Still, they welcomed the action, crediting the Chief Minister’s intervention for finally prompting the Pollution Control Board to act.
