Agartala, 1st March 2026: In a significant political development in the Baghan Gram Panchayat under the Kurti Assembly constituency, 13 voters, including the elected Congress panchayat member of Ward No. 4, Shahabuddin, have formally joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Party leaders claim that this move strengthens the BJP’s organizational base in the area.
Historically, Baghan Gram Panchayat was considered a stronghold of the Left Front, but it later came under Congress control following a change in government. Political analysts view the defection of an elected Congress member as politically significant in this context.
On Sunday afternoon, a joining ceremony was held at Shahabuddin’s residence in Ward No. 4, where he, his family members, and the other 12 voters received the BJP flag. Party sources further indicated that several more local residents have expressed interest in joining the BJP in the near future.
This shift is expected to alter the political landscape in Baghan Gram Panchayat within the Kadamtala–Kurti Assembly constituency, potentially reshaping voter alignments in the region.
