Agartala, 23rd March 2026: Special Police Officers (SPOs) and their families staged demonstrations across Tripura on Monday, pressing a 10-point charter of demands. Deputations were submitted to the police superintendents in Agartala and Dharmanagar, seeking regularization of SPO jobs and parity with police personnel in allowances and benefits.
The demands include: Regularization of SPO employment, Introduction of the National Pension Scheme (NPS) for SPOs, Uniform, ration, rifle, and medical allowances similar to police staff, Payment of salary 13 times in 12 months, and Provision of Dearness Allowance (DA) and Travel Allowance (TA).
In Agartala, SPO families gathered at Umakanta Stadium intending to meet the West Tripura Superintendent of Police. However, Additional SP Dhruva Nath arrived at the spot, assured them the matter would be placed before senior authorities, and asked them not to proceed further.
Family members, particularly wives of SPOs, highlighted the financial strain, stating that the current salary of Rs 11,800 is insufficient to run households amid rising costs of essentials and medicines.
Meanwhile, in Dharmanagar, families of SPOs submitted the 10-point demand memorandum to North Tripura SP Avinash Rai, urging that the issue be escalated to the state government. No untoward incidents were reported during the day’s protests.
