Agartala, 24th March 2026:   A shocking incident of extortion and violence has marred the celebrations of Basanti Puja in Tripura. Unlike the familiar complaints of forced donations during Durga Puja, this case has drawn attention for its brutality.

Today, a tuk-tuk driver identified as Srikanta Das was allegedly assaulted and left bloodied after refusing to pay a hefty festival subscription. The incident occurred on the Dharmanagar–Kailashahar Road near Purba Haflong.

According to the victim’s mother, the attackers not only demanded Rs 2,500 but also snatched his driving license and vehicle documents before physically assaulting him. She has lodged a formal complaint with the local police, demanding justice.

Das is currently undergoing treatment at North Tripura District Hospital. The incident has sparked outrage and unease in the locality, with residents expressing concern over the growing menace of forced festival collections.
