Agartala, 27th March 2026:  A 24-year-old man has been taken into custody in Tripura’s Sepahijala district on charges of possessing and circulating counterfeit Indian currency. The arrest took place in the Sonamura area after police received inputs about suspicious transactions.

According to officials from Sonamura Police Station, the accused, identified as Amir Hossain, was intercepted while allegedly attempting to use fake ₹500 notes. During the operation, officers recovered 16 counterfeit notes from his possession.

Police also seized several items that were reportedly purchased using the forged currency. These included small household goods and an Android mobile phone, which investigators believe may be linked to the broader operation.

Authorities have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation. During initial questioning, the accused is said to have provided information that could point to a wider network involved in the circulation of fake notes.

Law enforcement agencies suspect that the racket may not be limited to one location. Several areas within Sepahijala district, including Sonamura and nearby regions, are now under scrutiny as part of the ongoing probe.

Officials confirmed that the information gathered so far has been shared with higher authorities and intelligence agencies for further verification. Meanwhile, police are continuing their interrogation to trace the origin and distribution chain of the counterfeit currency.

The accused is expected to be produced before a local court, where investigators will seek custody to deepen the inquiry.
