Agartala, 27th March 2026: A family in West Chebri Gram Panchayat, Nandanpalli area, in the Khwai subdivision is struggling to save their two sons, both diagnosed with the life-threatening blood disorder, thalassemia. The father, Ranjan Ray, a daily-wage laborer, is at his wit’s end as he tries to care for his bedridden children while battling extreme poverty.

Ranjan Ray’s eldest son, Satyajit Ray, was diagnosed with thalassemia in 2010. Despite spending his meager savings and daily wages on treatment across the state, Satyajit’s condition has gradually deteriorated. Now completely bedridden and unable to walk, Satyajit’s treatment at AIIMS Delhi in 2023 had to be discontinued due to lack of funds.

In 2018, the younger son, Rudranil Ray, was also diagnosed with the same disease, further straining the family’s limited resources. Ranjan has approached local authorities, including MLA Pinaki Das Chowdhury and district administration offices, seeking assistance. In 2025, he even met the state Chief Minister, Dr. Manik Saha, pleading for support. According to Ranjan, the Chief Minister advised blood transfusions but did not provide any permanent solution or financial aid for advanced treatment.

Despite tirelessly navigating multiple levels of administration, Ranjan has received little help, leaving him frustrated and despairing. With both sons bedridden, even securing a single meal has become a struggle. He appeals to the government for assistance, hopeful that with proper medical support, his sons can recover and lead healthy lives.
