Agartala, 29th March 2026: Former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar today said that the current government has not come close to fulfilling the promises with which it crossed the Baitarani in 2018, even after seven and a half years.
Sarkar was addressing the 4th conference of the Dukli Divisional Committee, which was held at the Bhanu Ghosh Memorial Hall today.
He said that during the tenure of the Left Front government, Tripura occupied the first position in the country in the implementation of MNREGA.
“After the current government was formed, instead of 94–95 days of work, it does not exceed 26–35 days. Moreover, after completing the work, workers have to wait for months to receive their wages. Later, when workers go to withdraw their wages from the bank, mandal leaders try to stop them. If they resist, the workers have to face threats,” he said.
He also said that before forming the government, the BJP had promised that in families where there are no government employees, work would be arranged for unemployed youth according to their educational qualifications.
“The government has no effective role in fulfilling that promise. The Chief Minister himself claims that 19,000 to 20,000 jobs have been provided in seven and a half years. However, these are not regular jobs; they are contractual positions. The worrying thing is that they are not even receiving the salaries meant for contractual employees. Again, after a few months, some of them are laid off, while others are re-employed. In this way, they are unable to become regular employees. Therefore, to solve the unemployment problem, demands must be raised to create new vacancies and fill them on a regular basis,” he said.
Former MLA Rajkumar Chowdhury, MLA Ramu Das, Secretary of the DYFI State Committee Nabarun Deb, Secretary of the Dukli Divisional Committee Subhankar Majumdar, and others were present.
