APC President Pranab Sarkar seeks probe into journalist’s mysterious death at Siliguri

Date:

Agartala, 16th April 2026 :  Agartala Press Club has urged Chief Minister Manik Saha to initiate a thorough investigation into the mysterious death of journalist Pradip Debnath, a resident of Amarpur, Tripura, who reportedly passed away under suspicious circumstances at a hospital in Siliguri, West Bengal.

In a formal letter addressed to the Chief Minister, Pranab Sarkar, President of the Agartala Press Club and Acting President of the Tripura Journalists’ Union, expressed deep concern over the incident. According to hospital sources, Debnath was brought in by unidentified individuals, and his mobile phone was missing. The hospital authorities reportedly had no information about who admitted him. Debnath later succumbed to his condition, raising questions about the circumstances leading to his death.

Sarkar described the case as “mysterious” and called for the Tripura government to dispatch a team to West Bengal to collect facts and coordinate with the state authorities to uncover the truth. “The suspicious death of a journalist outside the state cannot be accepted in any manner,” the letter stated, urging the Chief Minister to personally intervene.

The Press Club also expressed gratitude to the Tripura government for arranging the return of Debnath’s body to his home state on humanitarian grounds. Alongside the demand for investigation, Sarkar appealed for financial assistance to be extended to the bereaved family.

The journalist fraternity in Tripura has voiced solidarity with Debnath’s family and emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in probing the incident.
