Khowai paralysed as Tipra Motha supporters block highways over arrests linked to post-TTAADC violence

Date:

Agartala, 19th April 2026: Tension gripped Khowai district on Sunday after supporters of the Tipra Motha Party staged large-scale road blockades protesting the arrest of several individuals in connection with alleged post-TTAADC election violence cases.

Protesters blocked key national highways from morning, demanding the “immediate and unconditional release” of those detained by police, whom they claimed were innocent and being targeted for political reasons. The demonstrations brought normal life to a complete standstill across the district.

Major disruptions were reported on the Khowai–Kamalpur route at Behalabari under Champahawor police station and on the Khowai–Agartala road at Chankhla point under Baijalbari police station. Another blockade was also staged at Belfang Naka under Ramchandraghat assembly constituency, further cutting off road connectivity.

Due to the simultaneous blockades, traffic movement between Khowai, Agartala, and Kamalpur was severely affected. Several vehicles, including passenger buses and ambulances carrying critically ill patients, were stranded for hours. Commuters, including children and elderly passengers, reportedly faced severe distress under hot weather conditions.

As tensions escalated, additional police forces were deployed to the affected areas to prevent further deterioration of law and order. Authorities have begun efforts to clear the blockades and restore normal traffic movement.

The protesters maintained that those arrested were being falsely implicated and alleged political harassment, while insisting that their agitation would continue until the detainees were released.

The prolonged unrest has triggered concern among local residents as daily life in several parts of Khowai district remained disrupted throughout the day.
