Agartala, 23rd April 2026: A shocking incident has took place at the North Belonia Anganwadi Centre in South Tripura’s Belonia subdivision. Just 13 days after repair work was completed, the ceiling of the centre collapsed onto the floor, narrowly avoiding a major tragedy involving young children.
Local sources informed that the centre was closed on Thursday due to the Garia Puja holiday when the collapse occurred. Fortunately, no children or staff were present at the time. Residents have raised serious concerns, asking who would have been held accountable had the centre been open and lives endangered.
The repair work had begun only a month earlier under the village development project and was recently completed. Responsibility for the project lay with Junior Engineer Binoy Banik of Bharat Chandranagar Block. Locals allege that poor-quality materials and negligence led to the collapse.
The situation escalated when media representatives arrived at the site. Reports claim that Sukanta Nagar Gram Panchayat members Srikanta Sen and Ashish Pathari confronted journalists, attempted to suppress coverage, and even issued threats.
Residents say this is not the first time substandard construction has been reported in the area, yet authorities have failed to act. The repeated lapses have fueled anger among parents and the wider community, who are demanding strict action against those responsible and assurance of quality standards in future projects.
While no official response has yet been issued by the administration, sources suggest an investigation into the incident may soon be launched.
