Two-day national seminar on women empowerment underway at Ramakrishna College

Date:

Agartala, 12th May 2026:  A two-day national seminar jointly organised by the Departments of History and Economics of Ramakrishna College began on Tuesday at the college premises in Kailashahar. The inaugural session of the seminar titled “Women in Policy and Polity: A Post-colonial Perspective” was held in Room No. 18 of the college. The seminar will continue till May 13.

The inaugural programme was attended by Principal Dr. Ajit Barman, Professor of the History Department of Assam University Dr. Suparna Roy, Chandipur Block BDO Debapriya Das and other distinguished guests. The programme was formally inaugurated with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp.

Delivering the inaugural address, Dr. Suparna Roy highlighted the growing participation and empowerment of women in contemporary Indian society. She said India is passing through a period of social transformation where the gap between men and women is gradually narrowing despite existing inequalities. She pointed out that in many educational institutions, the number of female students now exceeds that of male students, reflecting positive social change and increased family support towards women’s education.

Dr. Roy said that since independence, several initiatives have been undertaken for women’s development and special emphasis is now being placed on women-led development across the country.

Referring to the role of women in Indian history, she said that during the Vedic era, learned women like Gargi and Apala enjoyed respectable positions in society and actively participated in education and social life. She noted that although the status of women declined during later periods due to invasions and social changes, many women leaders continued to show remarkable courage and leadership.

Citing the example of Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar, Dr. Roy said she had set a shining example of women empowerment nearly three centuries ago through her leadership, administrative skills and social welfare activities.

The seminar witnessed participation from academicians, researchers, students and invited guests from different institutions. The organisers expressed hope that the seminar would provide a meaningful platform for discussions and exchange of ideas on women’s policies, politics and social structures from a post-colonial perspective.
